Stop Overcomplicating Business Development
Most consultants don’t need more outreach. They need better relationships.
Consulting isn’t a cold-outreach sport, it’s all about building and nurturing relationships.
Most people jump straight to mass messaging strangers because it feels “productive.” In reality, it’s the lowest ROI move you can make. Not because cold outreach never works, but because most people do it badly: too generic, too formal, too desperate, too forgettable.
Business development is simpler than people think.
This is what I have found to work over the past 3 years building my consulting business:
1. Start where trust already exists.
Your former coworkers, past clients, classmates, managers, collaborators. They already know your work ethic. They already know your personality. This isn’t “networking.” It’s reconnecting with the people who already know you’re capable.
2. Make it easy for people to think of you.
This is where so many consultants wipe out. You can’t expect someone to refer you or hire you if they can’t remember what you do. A simple, consistent positioning statement solves half your BD problems. “I help X companies achieve Y by doing Z.” Repeat it everywhere.
3. Nurture, don’t nag.
Business development is relationship maintenance, not a numbers game. Comment on a LinkedIn post. Send a useful resource. Shoot a quick update about a project you wrapped. Remain relevant by closing the visibility gap and building your credibility through consistency. Consistency builds trust faster than any pitch.
4. Stop waiting for the perfect moment.
Reach out before you need something. Business owners can smell “I need work” energy from a mile away. Stay in touch when things are good so the relationship isn’t transactional when you need support.
If you do these four things, you’re miles ahead of everyone blasting cold DMs.
And if you want help tightening your positioning, fixing your outreach, or figuring out how to keep your pipeline warm, my community and digital tools are designed for exactly this.
